I've mentioned this to Tom before, but I'll list this request formally. Basically, I've been trying to train members to use mail for distribution of important information (like "rehearsal times have changed") and blogs for more chatty items (like "have you seen this article"). Reason is that mail goes through right away but frequency of "notifications" can be controlled by each receiver.
We have notification default on our site set to NOT send notifications because when the default was the other way, people were generating all kinds of notifications by mistake. The result of this is that for people who are generating blog entries, I've been telling them to UNCHECK the "Don't send notifications" box, but after a year I have to admit defeat. Almost uniformly people cannot remember to do this. I'm about to give up on blogs, I'm tired of explaining what has gone wrong whenever anybody tries to make a blog entry.
I've suggested in the past that at least for editing of blog nodes, there should be something like "Save and send email" and "Save but send no email" buttons. I would even get rid of the "notifications" word, as it confuses people. Perhaps the two save buttons would be a good idea for the edit/save UI of all nodes, not just blogs.
