I find myself wanting to add specific pages for events that we have in our calendar that will provide more info for the person interested in it. THese might be either pages on our site, or at external ticketing vendors where the public can buy tickets to our event as well as find out more info.
Would love to have a field called something like 'Event Detail URL' that would allow me to put one of these into any events that we need the extra info for... then I could use it on our public site to direct the public to pages for more information.

I solved this in a different way. Instead of trying to make the Calendar events serve the needs of chorus members and the public site, I created a new content type called Public Event. The only additional field is a time/date. By adding a view in the sidebar, I now have a public events calendar that automatically shows the upcoming events. This nice part is that each entry is a web page, so by creating a public event, I'm also creating a stand-alone page for the event that can also be referenced within the site or pointed to by Facebook or somewhere else. It's been working very well on my site.
One advantage to this is that the calendar event entry can now be full of chorus information, like call times, job assignments, set lists and the like. The public event can have a plea to buy tickets, directions, and any other appropriate marketing.

I thought of that, but I also want to record attendance against my events, so I've created several view displays for the events in the calendar. Maybe I'll just use the notes to handle this, and format it using a page.

If I need attendance I just create a Calendar Event for the chorus and a Public Event for the marketing. It sounds like a lot of extra work, but it really isn't because I would have created a marketing page for the event anyway. Rather than a second calendar, it's really more like having a set of public pages that are automatically added to the sidebar based on their dates. It sounds like you are planning to create pages already, so it's just a matter of making them with an extra date field and creating a view.
As a bonus, pages for events that happen every year can be reused by just changing their dates. This pops them back into the sidebar as their date comes up again.
