Singing at weddings

With the height of wedding season just around the corner, singing groups can make some extra money and gain recognition by performing at weddings. While hiring a singing group isn't necessarily the first thing people think of for the wedding reception, once you get the idea in their heads they can get pretty excited about it, but you may have to put your choir marketing tools to work for you.

If you're interested in singing at weddings you're going to have to do some promoting so that people know you offer this as a service. Putting a page on your choir website dedicated specifically to what types of events your singing group will perform is a good idea. This is what Dublin Gospel Choir does to promote its wedding performances. The group also provides a sample of songs online so couples can more easily determine if the choir is a good match. The Business of Singing also recommends that groups develop a repertoire of common wedding tunes and love songs. It's always a good idea to have recorded samples of your group's singing online, but this can be especially useful when you want to perform at different gigs.

If you're new to the wedding singing game, marketing yourself will be the most important but challenging part of the new adventure. To get your name out there, try advertising in community newspapers. You can even promote yourself to your current Facebook and Twitter followers. While they may not be getting hitched, they may be able to refer you to someone who needs wedding performers. There are also online resources where you can list your group as potential performers at a reception. Sites like Gig Salad allow to list yourself and post a few pictures and other resources. Wedding singing is a fun way to promote your group and get some extra funds as well.

It can be very hard to promote yourself as a singer. As a friend of a singer I know this only too well.
I would advise anyone to use Facebook and Twitter - these can be great marketing tools if used properly. It's really all about spreading the word...
