I did and had no problems. Doesn't hurt to log out and visit all your public content after you've done this to ensure that everything is still visible to the public that needs to be.
However, as Tom's email stated, the real trouble is things that ARE NOT supposed to be publicly visible being visible. The suggestion was to copy the URL of someone's profile to clipboard, logout of your site, then paste that URL into your address bar and see if you can still see the profile. If you can at that point, there's other issues you'll want to address. The only thing I'm wary of is other content like that being visible as well. I don't really want to have to go through each of my pages (or even each content type for that matter) just to make sure it's not publicly visible. But alas, that may be the only way to know for sure. May have to just spot check the really important content and call it good.
