Seems odd, but when I delete a calendar event, the result of the action loads the public web site. I'm still logged in, but I end up on our front page.
On my way to #drupalcon with 3000 other geeks, hoping to fill my brain with useful Drupal goodness!

I've noticed the same. But, when I started thinking about how calendar events are stored in the system, it made sense. If you delete a node (which is a calendar event) while in edit mode, it's like removing the floor from underneath your own feet. You have to go "somewhere" after the page you deleted goes away. Drupal only knows that you were viewing a URL that is now invalid and needs to "drop" you somewhere. The safest place to drop you is back at your home page.
To avoid this, you can delete events (or any other node) without "standing" on them by going to Administer => Content Management => Content and filter for the types of nodes you want to delete. You can select one (or many) of the calendar events and then delete them as a group.
