Forum view

I know some people might prefer the forum as it is, but my preference would be to have all the posts listed chronologically in each thread.

As it stand right now the conversations get hard to follow.  I know other fourms I belong to have the view of the forum either threaded ot chronologically as an option for each member

I kind of like them threaded as they are, but I'll bow to pressure if there's any kind of consensus.  Comments?

either threaded or reverse chronological

Threaded works if the oldest threads appear first, and then replies to those threads appear in the order they happened.  Two replies to the same comment should, again, appear with the older one first.

Simple reverse chronological works, too.  Oldest first, newest last.  The first reply to the original post should come immediately after the original post.

It'd be nice to have the option to sort however we like, though :)

Don't like the threading

I'd prefer a simple chronological order with oldest posts appearing first.  The threading makes it too easy to put the posts in the wrong order, particularly with the create-comment entry at the end of the thread that doesn't create a comment at the end of the thread.  Features that depend on the user to do non-intuitive things don't usually produce good results, as we are seeing already.

Hopefully this post will end up at the end of the list.

The current comment sorting is really weird

The current comment sorting is really weird.  It appears that top-level replies are sorted newest first (which I dislike), and replies to that comment are indented and sorted oldest first (which I prefer).

So my two cents is a) sort top level messages in a forum as is (newest first); b) sort replies to messages oldest first (the opposite of current), and c) sort replies to comments as is (threaded, oldest first).

Order of comments not same as threading...?

Well, there's general reply order and then there's threading...

I'm typing this COMMENT in the box at the bottom of the TOPIC, which means it'll be an nonspecific reply to the main post. The way the forum is currently set to order this comment will be to make this post display right after the initial topic post. Most forums would put this comment at the very end of the topic.

However, if I click they REPLY button in an already existing COMMENT that creates a separate "thread" based on that particular COMMENT. Instead of threading things in this fashion most forums allow you to "quote" another persons comment so you know what a new comment is referring to (still placing that new "quoting" comment at the end of the topic).

It's all a matter of knowing where you want your comment/reply to show up when you join the conversation and then clicking/typing in the appropriate place.

Yup some like threading...

Yup some like threading... some prefer chronological.  My preference is for chronological because I find so many people on forums don't understand how to best reply to the threaded format and things quickly go out of wack.

Many forums have an option that can be chosen in each users profile so that everyone gets what they want.  If that option is not available here... its a case of... oh well... threaded will be fine.

I get it now.  When you reply

I get it now.  When you reply directly to the original post it creates a new thread of comments, and all those comment threads are listed in reverse cronological order.  That's just weird.

Been searching online but I can't find any way to configure it differently.  I'll keep my eyes open.

In the end, this was a facepalm.  It's just a setting under Admin > Content types > Forum topics.  in the "Comment settings" area.

Fixed!

The hazard of these things

The hazard of these things being almost TOO customizable. I see you also removed the comment subject line requirement.

And now I have fixed these settings on my chorus' forum.

Did this change recently?  I thought I had been seeing the most

Did this change recently?  I thought I had been seeing the most recent comments always at the bottom, but noticed in this thread that the most recent comment is in the middle of the page.  It's hard to keep up to date on the longer topics when the new stuff can be buried in the middle.

For some reason, I thought this was a user setting, but maybe I'm thinking of another forum,

If depends if people reply to a post, or just post a new comment at the bottom.  Replies go inside the thread, new comments go at the bottom.
