Mailing lists - All members can see all archives

Hi All,

A change as resulted in unexpected results.  By opening up the archives of the mailing lists to all members it means that everyone can read messages sent between all email groups.  If you have a mailing list for your Board and members of the Board have been discussing sensitive matters by email, those messages can be open to all you members to read.

My immediate response was to go in and delete sensitive messages, there is a better way.

Go into Permissions >  MailingList Module and un-check access mailing list email for your Members

My preference is for only members of a particular mailing list to be able to read the archives of messages sent to a list.

Ian

Yeah, that's not good...

Yeah, there are at least a couple ways I can see this getting fixed, though Tom would probably know how feasible each option might be.

Clicking the Mailing Lists option from the navigation pane should only display the archives of lists for which the user logged in is included.

Somehow make it so Access Control can be applied to mailing lists. Then Admins can lock each list down as they see fit.

I've deployed a fix for

I've deployed a fix for this.  It works nicely through the web front end for lists secured with "role" or "list" (i.e. anyone on the list) validation settings.

I hope I have not broken anything else in the process!  That mailinglist code...

At this point I have decided

At this point I have decided to keep the permissions to the mailing list set so the members cannot access them.

If I change permission so that Members can see the mailing list archive, I must also set the Board mailing list so that no one can send to it but the Board to protect that archive from the members.

I think its preferable to have everyone in the chapter able to send messages to the Board and if the consequence is not being able to see the mail archives...  frankly its not much of a loss. We used Yahoo group email prior to Groupanizer and unless the members had a Yahoo account they couldn't access the archives, very few had Yahoo accounts and I'll bet none of them ever accessed the archives.

If someone needs an old email they can get it through me.

I believe if you turn

I believe if you turn off User Management > Permissions >  MailingList Module and it is the first item "access mailinglist email" your users will not be able to send email
