Mailing Lists vs. Email Handling

Okay - so I'm getting really confused about the Mailing Lists and the Email Handling.
Hoping that some one can clarify the difference between the two and which I should be using - and how to set it up.
I want to create mailing lists so that I can email different groups/subgroups.
When trying to create one in Mailing Lists - there are settings under "incoming email" - and I don't understand this. It says that a mailbox has to be set up - but I'm not sure how to do that.
Help please!
Thanks.

There is a major rewrite

There is a major rewrite coming out for the email code.  I'm not sure when it will be deployed, but you may not want to spend too much time learning the details of the current system.
With that said, you don't actually need to configure an incoming mailbox for your list.  If you set the list type to "Allow posting only through this web site" then you can create a mailing list that can reach groups of people within your chorus based on roles or singing sections or other group memberships. You can then send email to everyone on that list by creating the message on the website using the "post" button for the list.
The incoming mailbox lets you create an email address somewhere and the Groupanizer server will poll that mailbox for messages and send them to the mailing list.  For example, I can create cool-kids@HeartOfMaryland.org and link that to a list that emails the entire bass section.  With that set up, any messages sent to the email address will go to my bass section.  This is nice because it lets us use email to reach groups of people instead of logging in to Groupanizer to create messages.  In practice, I have mailboxes set up for our frequently used lists and we just use the site for the infrequent lists because my email provider only allows me to create a limited number of mailboxes.
As I mentioned above, this is all changing at some point, so your best bet may be to just create the lists without the incoming mail for now because it is easier.  You can always change it later if you get impatient.

Unless you have access to an

Unless you have access to an email server of some sort of your own, you will need to ask Tom to setup email boxes for you for each of the email addresses that you want to use.  For us, it was Members, Leads, Basses, Baris and Quartets @alaskasoundcelebration.groupanizer.com.  He will set them up and give you a password for each of them.
I know he is traveling for the next couple of weeks, so not sure how fast you would get a response from him at this point.

Hi guys, "Traveling" in this

Hi guys,

"Traveling" in this case really means "having more time to code" so I've made some breakthroughs on the mail handling stuff.  In beta testing of the current mail handling code it became clear that people needed to be able to assign an incoming email address to more than one group for sending (e.g. members and candidates), so I had to rework quite a bit of code to accommodate that.  Including building a very sexy data input form - took quite a bit of learning on my part, but it's looking and working great now.

So as soon as I iron out a few last things and put the code through its paces, I'll release another version.  Soon after that most of the current mailing list functionality will be decommissioned.  (It will still be handy for sending outgoing mail.)

So that's the update from Vaasa, Finland!

Best regards,
Tom

P.S. I'm here with my quartet viaVoice at a choral festival.
