My experience creating a public site

I've just finished creating a public site for our chorus using Groupanizer.  We've been using the chorus member features for about 6 months now and finally decided to migrate our public site as well.  The whole process took about two weeks, although the bulk of the content was ready in just a day or two.  If there is any interest, I'll be happy to post some details about my experience, being a complete Drupal newbie when I started.

In the meantime, feel free to check out the site at www.HeartOfMaryland.org.  I welcome any questions, comments, or critiques.

Tom,

I would love to get the details of how you did what you did. The site looks great BTW! I'm starting to migrate a website over as well and am somewhat confused on how to proceed.

Thanks,

Jim

I would also love to know the details of how you did it. We want to get to that point as well, but right now I'm still trying to get all the members only content migrated over to Groupanizer. I am a total newbie with Drupal as well. What theme did you use for your site?

Thanks!

The site uses the Blogbuzz II

The site uses the Blogbuzz II theme. It's not exactly what I wanted, but I liked the look of the menus and can live with the colors.

There is a page in the Feature by Feature section of the user manual that explains the basic steps to get Groupanizer in shape for public pages. I followed that and did a lot of trial and error before figuring the rest out. I took a lot of notes while creating the site and am in the process of writing the whole thing up. If Tom likes it then maybe it can go in the manual. If not then I'll put it somewhere and will post a link. It should be ready in a day or two.

Would LOVE to see your notes! Your site looks great, and I'd love to know how you got to there. I'm interested in getting my chorus up to this as well.

I started my Groupanizer

I started my Groupanizer experience in April of 2010! And I'm still trying to figure it out. Of course, I don't sit down and use it every day, which possibly explains the torture! At any rate, I have just now managed - I hope - to move our site over to Groupanizer from our previous host. Forty-eight hours from now I should know if it was successful. And, what you'll see is the most basic, colorless, sans-graphics web site ever to grace the internet. The benefit? Up to date information that I can easily maintain. Another 14 moths or so, and I ought be able to figure out color! REALLY looking forward to your write ups, Tom!

Stay tuned and sing well!

Make sure you let Tom know if

Make sure you let Tom know if you are moving your domain. He needs to make changes on the Groupanizer side for it to work correctly. I just learned that the hard way.

Looking forward to seeing your site. Don't expect too much from my docs toward making the site look good. I'm not a designer of any sort so my sites have the look that only a software engineer can bring. The most useful thing in my documentation is probably the description of all of the Drupal parts and pieces. It took me months to finally start my site while I cowered at the thought of blocks, regions, nodes, and modules. Turns out it wasn't that hard after all.

Check the User Manual link in the Support menu at the top of the page. It might be there now.

The notes are now part of the manual. See http://www.groupanizer.com/feature-publicwebsite to get your public web site started. If you notice any problems with the documentation or have any suggestions, please let me know.

Take a look at

Take a look at marinbarbershopchorus.org. You'll see the results of 1) our successful effort in finding the original "owner" of our domain name, and moving it over to Groupanizer and; 2) my unsuccessful efforts at making an attractive web page! Hah!

Your page is off to a good

Your page is off to a good start. Now you just need to get more content in there. There are a few small formatting problems, but otherwise it's coming together nicely. See this post for the instructions to get rid of the date and author information at the top of the page:
http://www.groupanizer.com/getting-rid-submitted-line-pages

It looks like the page is also trying to load a picture in the banner that isn't coming through. That's probably a permission problem - check the View Uploaded Files. See this manual page to fix that:

I have been working on our public web site http://http://bigsunchorus.groupanizer.com/

I have the following questions: How do I get rid of the white bar above the words 'home page'? How do I get the formatting to allow for centering test? How can I add an additional picture to the top banner and not have it on the private pages?

Not sure how to get rid of it. Put some words into the mission statement and it will be displayed there.

If you go to the Themes

If you go to the Themes option (Administer › Site building › Themes), you can toggle the display of the Mission Statement there. Does that help?

Thanks Ian and Antony.

Thanks Ian and Antony.
After Ian posted that it is the mission statement I realized that I could toggle it off on the themes page as you described Antony and it is now gone. Much appreciated for your information.

Now I am working on adding a picture in the banner section at the top of the page. Then I will begin adding additional pages with details.
