new dashboard just happened... I didn't do it.

I just logged in  again and we now have the "new 2011" dashboard.  I didn't make the change and frankly I don't want it.  My users are simple and I much prefer presenting the information I want them to see on one page, not hoping that they will click all the right icon to see what they should see.

I tried to put the dashboard back per the instruction in the email when Tom first announced the availability of the new dashboard but its not simple as it was then.  When it was first announced there were basically to choices to pick from the old one and the new one.  When I looked at the new one then, it was easy to go back to the old one.  Not so any more.

How do I get the good - old dashboard back?

I tried the new dashboard by adding some modules to it.  Admin > Groupanizer > Dashboard settings

They all come out in one long list, not nicely arranged on the page like they did before.  I guess we can hope that member willscroll all the way to the bottom to get what they used to see pretty easily....

Also, many of the buttons at the top of the new thing are redundant.  No point in wasting screen space with them when they are already available in our menu right above the dashboard. Is there a way to get rid of them?

I have set up a poll to get my user reaction, but I am pretty sure I know what the answer will be.

new dashboard - UGGH!

I agree with these folks. Please restore the older default dashboard - or at least give us the option we had a few days ago to remove the new one ourselves. I MUCH prefer the original!

Thanks,
Doug

Agreed.  this is just like a fancier version of the menu bar at the top. What I like about the old format is we can see so much without clicking anywhere.

I came across this yesterday...could check either the dashboard or dashboard 2011 beta. I did...but put it right back. Now wish I could remember where I found it.

Old dashboard

Hi folks,

I see you've noticed the new dashboard!  LOL  Well I guess I should have expected not everyone would be keen.

I will provide an alternative dashboard a lot like the old one BUT let me explain where I'm coming from on this.  Here are my issues with the old dashboard:

  1. Architecturally it was a mess, and prevented you from using standard Drupal themes!
  2. It is necessary for me to make room for a (subtle) ad on that page, and there was no room.
  3. About 70% of users do not make proper use of the blog that I originally assumed would be so important
  4. The original dash didn't properly show the scope of the system, and because of the increased use of public-facing themes, I can't rely on the primary menu always being there.  The new dash addresses that.
  5. One could argue I was wasting a lot of screen space and CPU cycles generating all those dashboard blocks (eg. the Song Status block) when they were non-interactive anyway and all people *need* is the knowledge that they must click.  They had to click anyway on the original, if they wanted to do anything.
  6. On many themes, there simply isn't room for two nicely formatted columns of equal width.  I've seen an awful lot of squished-up dashboard blocks.
  7. I just didn't find it all that attractive!

Having said that, if we can design an alternative dashboard that meets all the various needs, I'm all for it!  I'd particularly like to get a dashboard up that includes the blogs again.

Care to help me with a design that you would like better?

old dashboard

Can we put the old one back, while you design a new one please. This one is going to confuse the heck out of my users.

My "smart ass" answer... make

My "smart ass" answer... make it look just like the old one ;-)

  1. I was using Garland which I understood to be a core theme...
  2. put the add at the bottom, below my content
  3. we we're using the blog with a teaser line  to encourage users to log  read the plan for the coming meeting
  4. Ok but I have a Primary menu and the new buttons use a lot of screen space for menu items that are right above them.  Is there way to get rid of the ugly buttons?
  5. how many concurrent users does Groupanizer actually get?  Surely a commercial server can handle the load
  6. Ok.. I just didn't have that issue
  7. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... I liked it.  I had arranged things where I wanted them, other than order on the screen there is now limited ability to arrange things and the dashboard gets really long.

OK OK...

OK folks, you now have the option to switch back to Dashbord Classic if you prefer.  I guess I didn't anticipate anyone having strong feelings of attachment for the old dashboard.  Thanks for your understanding.

Meanwhile, I'll work on a version that is a better compromise.

Cheers,
Tom

Since the new dashboard the

Since the new dashboard the /documents url is no longer there.  The documents are in there but I can't get to them via the documents icon or even if I just put in the URL for /documents.  Only at /node/2 reference.

I tried to manually put in an alias but it does not let me add a url with the word documents.

Please advise.

Hi John, I've attempted to

Hi John,

I've attempted to add an alias "manually" (i.e. with a script) for everyone, so that the /documents url points to the page pointed-to by the Documents item in the primary links.  That Documents icon can only point to /documents, so making it work involves making sure /documents is actually pointing where you want it to go!

Where do we stand now, with your site config?
