Search returns items with access denied

I'm finally building our public web site and spending a lot of time searching the forums for help.  Sometimes the search results return items that are listed as MailingList instead of Forum and when I click these I get Access Denied.  Do I need different permisions?  Is there a list I need to join to find out all of the site building serets?  

My site is almost ready to go live once I figure out these last few issues.
